Some videos won't cache ahead when streamed
Some videos won't cache ahead when streamed such as this one:
http://tekpub.com/view/aspmvc/8
Because my internet connections are sub 2Mb, I tend to hit play then pause to allow a good chunk of the video to download.
I've tried this on two different internet connections and two different machines and the behaviour is the same. This makes watching videos a fairly poor experience because they stop and start all the time.
My DSL connections are ~1.8Mb.
I was able to watch videos #1 to #7 of the ASP.NET MVC series by Rob Conery yesterday without any problems (i.e. the player read ahead just fine). However today it's fairly appalling.
On PC1/Connection1 I'm running:
Windows 7 64 bit ultimate
Chrome 4.0.249.78 (36714) stable
Firefox 3.5.7
IE 8.0.7600.16385
Flash WIN 10.0.42.34
On PC2/Connection 2 I'm running:
Windows 7 32 bit ultimate
Chrome 4.0.249.78 (36714) beta
Firefox 3.5.7
IE 8.0.7600.16385
Flash WIN 10.0.32.18
Neither ISP's (Murphx and AAISP) throttle downloads, I resell Murphx and we've got our own virtual DSL pipes i.e. we control the capping).
As I mentioned, this was all fine and dandy yesterday, but today it's a bit rubbish.
Cheers
Kev

I have this problem, too!
Tell me when someone solves it.
The more people who report this problem, the more it gets noticed.

Inappropriate? We rolled to a streaming server that should have a lot more throughput - sounds like you're having issues? I disabled autoPlay/autoLoad as I figured it would stream faster - most people see marked improvements.
I'll take a look at #8 and see if there's an issue - stay tuned... -
Hi Rob...any joy with this?...pretty much all of the videos now behave this way. Pressing pause will give me ~40 seconds of cache ahead then stop. If I hit play, the video reaches this 40s read ahead point then stalls and starts and stalls. Sometimes I get a decent run on the video (with no cache ahead)...but other times it's unwatchable.
I just tried to watch the Mastering NHibernate #1 video and it's really bad. I get about 9 minutes in and it stops and starts all the time.
Why isn't the player caching ahead like it used to when I hit pause?
Cheers

Inappropriate?Weird - it's not caching because we're not using HTTP, which means it's not treating it like a file. We're using RTMP which is a streaming protocol that lets you skip ahead, etc.
I think there's a way that I can switch the two - in other words if it's not working then you can switch to HTTP and the player will cache it. Lemme see what I can do -

this solves the problem

Looking forward to seeing how this goes.

Just to let you know, I also tried watching these videos on my Mac (Chrome 4 beta) and get the same behaviour. -
Inappropriate?I'm having the same issue with all the videos. I enjoyed the cache ahead feature, as I have similar restrictions to the OP, so I could just hit play/pause wait for the video to be cached then go ahead and enjoy the whole video.
ps Rob/James I'm really enjoying the stuff your doing, keep up the good work.
But bring back caching guys, please !! ;)
I’m anxious

Inappropriate?I am also having this problem, and being on a slow connection for the moment it makes them rather unpleasant to watch at times.

Inappropriate?Nice one guys for the alternate viewer. This has completely solved all my problems.
I’m thankful

Inappropriate? Thanks guys for the alternative viewer. As with Mike above, this has solved a huge problem for me.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?I have this problem as well. Very annoying. I have a 16Mb ADSL connection and get good speeds normally, but frequently have problems trying to stream videos from Tekpub. Would seem only way to watch them uninterrupted is to sign up for annual package and download the full video
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? We stream from Amazon Edge servers so bandwidth is not the issue - at least on our end. However one thing I *do* know is that many ISPs will throttle video streams that peak out over 400 or so Kbps - and we stream (usually) at 768Kbps because of resolution and quality (it's the best balance we could find).
Other things we've found are that corporate firewalls and proxy servers do a horrible job at relaying video streams - so if you're at work, this could be the problem.
Try the alternate viewer (which streams using HTTP instead of RTMP) and see if that fixes it for you.
